The Chamwell Charity had the vision to enhance the lives of those living with disabilities. They aim to provide an unrivalled range of services that improve wellbeing, physical fitness and social interaction and have a positive impact on how they feel about their lives as a whole. The Chamwell Centre was designed to achieve these goals.
The Chamwell Centre is built in the grounds of the Milestone Special School located in Gloucester. The Chamwell Centre Charity was registered in 2015 and within the first 18 months, they had a huge following and had raised almost £3.5 million for the new centre. The Chamwell Centre in Gloucester is an exciting and ground-breaking facility that will support the needs of disabled children and adults across the county. The completely new building, estimated at a value of £5.1 million, is in the grounds of The Milestone Special School and will provide therapy, sports and leisure activities alongside much more for not only the school’s students but will also provide facilities for toddlers, children and adults with disabilities in the local area.
The pupils’ medical issues include cerebral palsy, neuromuscular disorders, severe genetic conditions, hearing loss and visual impairment. Additionally, many of the students have further needs, such as feeding difficulties or severe epilepsy. Many of the pupils are physically fit but have severe autism, poor communication skills, learning disabilities and challenging behaviour.
APE had the pleasure to work with the Chamwell charity on this project. For this site APE installed intruder alarms, fire alarms, disabled refuge alarms, access control and pool alarms which are all highly important in the vicinity such as this. The Milestone Special School, where The Chamwell Centre is located, has 308 pupils, including 67 non-ambulant students. APE worked to ensure that all the centre’s needs were met, and the students and carers were the safest they could possibly be. The fire safety and security of this building is of the upmost importance to ensure the earliest warning to a fire or security breach, as well as being easy to use day to day.
